What is a CHIC number?

The Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) is a centralized database.  Their primary purpose is to provide owners and breeders health information that will assist in breeding/buying healthy dogs.

The CHIC program provides accurate information about the results of a breeder's health testing.  A CHIC number is issued when a breeder has satisfied each breed specific health test AND the breeder has opted to make those test results public.

If you buy a puppy from a breeder who breeds with a health CHIC number, your breeder has complied with every health test requirement set forth by their parent club (in our case it's the German Shorthaired Pointer Club Of America).

For example..  Cone Degeneration is a disease that causes blindness in German Shorthaired Pointers.  If you buy your puppy from a breeder who health tested for CD and results are "normal", your puppy has a zero chance of becoming blind from this disease.

Did you know hip dysplasia is a hereditary defect?  3% of all GSPs have hip dysplasia.  Your odds of a dysplasia puppy are GREATLY reduced when you buy from a breeder who's sire and dam are OFA hips good or excellent, excellent being the highest rating by OFA.

We cannot promise your puppy will never be sick, acquire a contagious virus or die of cancer (cancer is the #1 disease that kills GSP's).  We can promise that we will do everything possible to give you a healthy puppy, take very good care of your puppy, and test the parents for for all hereditary diseases set forth by our parent club i.e. breeding with a CHIC number.
